Visiting Miyazaki’s Only Department Store
During my recent trip to Miyazaki, I decided to stop by Yamakataya, the city’s only department store. Located just a five-minute walk from my accommodation, it served as a convenient spot to escape the heat and take a break. If you are expecting a modern, high-end shopping mall, you might be surprised; the store has a distinct, nostalgic atmosphere that reminded me of old-fashioned department stores from the past.

If your primary goal is high-end luxury shopping, you may find the selection limited. The store focuses heavily on local Japanese brands. While there is a Coach boutique and a decent selection of cosmetics, it lacks the variety of international luxury labels found in larger cities. I also checked the children’s floor, which features Miki House, though there were no sales running during my visit.
The Basement Food Hall
For me, the highlight of the visit was the basement food hall. It is a fantastic place to get a glimpse into local life.
