A Relaxing Day Trip to Aoshima

During my trip to Miyazaki in June, I decided to take a spontaneous day trip to Aoshima. Although it was the rainy season, I woke up on a Saturday to clear skies and decided to seize the opportunity. Aoshima is a perfect destination for a half-day excursion, offering a peaceful escape from the city with its stunning coastal views.

Getting Around with the Holiday Pass

For travelers visiting on weekends or holidays, the Miyazaki Holiday Pass is an absolute must. It is a 1-day unlimited bus pass that makes getting around incredibly cost-effective. The pass costs 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for children, but you can snag it for just 600 yen if you purchase it online.

Since the bus ride from Miyazaki city to Aoshima takes about 40–50 minutes, the pass pays for itself quickly. I used it to travel to Aoshima in the morning and then headed to the Aeon Mall in the afternoon, all without worrying about extra transportation costs.

Practical Tips for Your Journey

• Check the Schedules: Bus intervals can be long, and some routes take longer by passing through the airport. I found that while Google Maps is helpful, it is best to verify the local bus schedule at the stop to avoid long waits.
• Pack Essentials: Aoshima is quite rural, and convenience stores are limited. Be sure to bring your own water and snacks, as the shops near the beach are more focused on souvenirs and dining than standard convenience items.
• Sun Protection: There is very little shade on the island. If you are visiting in the summer, definitely bring a hat, a parasol, and plenty of water to stay comfortable while walking.

Exploring Aoshima

My itinerary was simple and stress-free. I spent my time visiting the Aoshima Shrine, walking along the unique rock formations known as the “Devil’s Washboard” (Oni no Sentakuita), and wandering through the free Aoshima Subtropical Botanical Garden.

I also made sure to try the local specialty: mango ice cream. The atmosphere was wonderfully laid-back, and I even had the chance to dip my feet into the Pacific Ocean. I left the city around 10:00 AM and was back by late afternoon, leaving me plenty of time to head to the Aeon Mall for some shopping using the same pass.
