Choosing a Hearty Meal in Miyazaki City Center
After spending the morning exploring Aoshima, I found myself back in Miyazaki city center looking for a substantial meal. I wanted something satisfying to reward a busy morning of travel, and after doing some quick research, I decided to treat myself to a proper unagi (eel) bowl. While Miyazaki is famous for chicken nanban and Miyazaki beef, I had heard great things about the local eel, and I’m glad I followed that lead.

Restaurant Overview: Manmaru (鰻丸)
I headed to Manmaru (鰻丸), which is conveniently located in the heart of the city. You can find it on the 2nd floor of the Wakakusa Kinjodo Building at 3-3-15 Tachibanadorihigashi. The restaurant has a clean, quiet atmosphere that felt very welcoming, making it an excellent spot for a solo traveler to enjoy a meal without feeling out of place.

Menu and Pricing: Unaju Options
Manmaru offers a variety of unagi dishes, including their signature Unaju (eel over rice) in different sizes, as well as specialties like liver ponzu and shirayaki. The menu is straightforward, focusing on the quality of the eel preparation.

Dining Experience: The 2,400 Yen Unaju
I opted for the ‘small’ Unaju, priced at 2,400 yen. While I was initially concerned that the small portion might leave me hungry, it turned out to be the perfect amount for a single serving. The eel was generous in size and prepared beautifully—the exterior was perfectly crispy, while the inside remained incredibly soft.
What impressed me most was the balance of flavors. The seasoning wasn’t overly sweet or salty, allowing the natural, savory taste of the eel to shine through. The sauce had also soaked into the rice just right, making every bite enjoyable. It was a high-quality meal that felt well worth the price for the experience.
