A Vibrant Hub Near Chinatown
During my April 2024 trip to Bangkok, I spent time exploring Sampeng Market, located right near Chinatown. It is a dense, bustling area packed with stalls selling everything from stationery and hair accessories to bags. The sheer variety of items makes it a fun place to wander, though it is definitely a spot where you can easily lose track of time.

Essential Tips for a Smooth Visit
Because Sampeng is an outdoor market, it can get incredibly hot. I highly recommend visiting early in the morning to beat the heat. While there are small shops scattered throughout where you can grab a drink or a quick rest, my personal strategy was to power through the shopping and then head straight back to the hotel to relax. If you end up buying a lot, you can also use delivery services like Grab or Bolt to send your haul directly to your accommodation.

Shopping Highlights: Custom Bags and Sanrio Finds
One of my favorite discoveries was a shop where you can create your own custom bag. You can choose your base bag and then personalize it by adding hooks, charms, or dolls. They have various sizes, including convenient carriers for drinks.
For fans of character goods, there is plenty to see. I was surprised to find blocks from the popular children’s show Numberblocks, and there is a wide selection of Sanrio merchandise, including Kuromi bags. I picked up a particularly cute pouch that I didn’t see anywhere else in the market—it was a unique find!

Finding Comfort at The OK Station
If you need a break, I recommend heading to The OK Station. It’s a building with air conditioning, which is a lifesaver in the Bangkok heat. Most importantly, it has clean restrooms, making it the perfect pit stop when you need to recharge during your shopping spree.

Strategy for Kids’ Gifts and Bulk Buys
I focused primarily on items for children, such as hairbrushes, stationery, and gift boxes. If you are looking for party favors or gifts for a daycare, buying in bulk here is a great strategy; it is significantly cheaper than what you would find back home.
While my focus was on the kids, the market has plenty for adults too. There are endless stalls dedicated to accessories, hair ornaments, umbrellas, and tumblers. Whether you are hunting for specific character goods or just browsing for affordable souvenirs, Sampeng Market offers a great variety if you go prepared.
