The Appeal of Herbal Ball Massage

I am a self-proclaimed herbal ball massage fanatic. There is something uniquely restorative about the way these steamed, herb-filled compresses warm the body. In Bangkok, this treatment is widely available and typically combines traditional Thai massage with the application of the hot herbal balls.

One practical tip: always ask to turn off the air conditioning during your session. Because the treatment leaves your clothes slightly damp, the direct AC breeze can quickly make you feel cold and uncomfortable.

Managing Expectations

It is important to note that shop reputation doesn’t always guarantee a perfect experience; your satisfaction often comes down to the chemistry between you and your therapist. Furthermore, local shops rarely specify the exact ratio of Thai massage to herbal ball application, so consider each visit a bit of an adventure. Here is my take on three shops near Saphan Taksin and the Shangri-La Bangkok.

Fasai Massage

Located about a five-minute walk from Saphan Taksin station, this is a popular local spot that attracts many Korean travelers. While the therapists are generally skilled, the communication can be a bit challenging as only a few staff members speak English. I found the experience to be decent, though not exceptional enough for me to return more than once. They offer a 90-minute Thai Herbal Hot Massage for 850 THB.

Suanploo Thai Massage

I have visited this shop for years, largely because I enjoy the traditional atmosphere—specifically the ceiling fans and the floor-style double rooms. It has historically been popular with Japanese visitors rather than Koreans. While the price is excellent—a 90-minute Thai Herbal Hot Compress is 550 THB—the quality of the massage depends heavily on the specific therapist you get. Since my favorite therapist from past trips is no longer there, I only visited once this time.

The Absolute Massage

This is a newer, more modern establishment that feels like a blend of a local shop and a luxury spa. The manager is incredibly friendly and speaks excellent English, making the booking process very convenient. They are open from 10:30 to 23:00, with last orders at 22:00.

I was very satisfied here, especially after finding a therapist I clicked with. I tried the 90-minute Warm Herbal massage for 750 THB and the 120-minute Absolute Signature for 1500 THB; both were excellent. My companion tried the four-hand massage, but found it a bit distracting. With clean facilities and private rooms equipped with showers, this is a great choice if you prefer a more polished environment, even if the prices are slightly higher than the surrounding local shops.

Summary

Choosing the right shop is a matter of personal preference. If you want a clean, modern facility with easy booking, The Absolute Massage is a strong contender. If you prefer a traditional, budget-friendly local experience, Suanploo or Fasai might suit you better. Regardless of where you go, remember that the best sessions are the ones where you find a therapist whose technique matches your needs.
